On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
